Route 3/495 Interchange

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), committed to developing transportation improvements that best balance transportation needs, the environment, community concerns and costs, will hold a Virtual Public Information Center (PIC) to provide local residents and businesses with information on the Route 3 and 495 Interchange Project. You are encouraged to actively participate by providing comments by mail or e-mail – or utilizing this site’s comment form.
This PIC will be held virtually. Please visit the following website any time between August 1 and August 14 to learn more about the project and leave comments. Comments will be accepted through August 31.
The Route 3 and 495 Interchange Project is located in North Bergen Township, Hudson County. Routes 3 and 495 within the project limits are divided four- to six-lane urban principal arterial freeway/expressways with a posted speed limit of 50 mph. Routes 3 and 495 form an interchange east of the NJ Turnpike with access to/from the Turnpike, Lincoln Tunnel, Routes 1&9 and various local routes.
The project limits extend along Route 495 from the NJ Turnpike to the Route 495 Viaduct, which eventually leads to the Lincoln Tunnel. This project also extends along Route 3 from Paterson Plank Road to the structure carrying Route 3 over the New York and Susquehanna Railroad.
NJDOT proposes improvements along Route 3 and 495 within the project limits, as well as the interchange ramps, to achieve the following:
Eliminate left hand exits and entrances, as they typically have more than double the crash rate of a right hand entrance and exit
Eliminate or minimize weaving within the interchange and maximize the distances between successive ramp terminals (except loop ramps)
Provide lane balance along with standard length auxiliary lanes;
Prioritize route continuity over traffic patterns, such as tangential segments for Routes 3 and 495 at critical merges
Update ground mounted and overhead signing in accordance with the MUTCD and maximize visibility of the same.
